North Coast Music Festival will make its comeback to Union Park this coming Labor Day weekend for the third year as “summer’s last stand.” It boats a diverse line up, with more than 100 acts, ranging from electronic to rock to hip-hop, scheduled for sets that are sure to shake up the city from Aug. 31- Sept. 2.

Three-day General Admission tickets have already sold out, but VIP and single day passes are still available.

The fest will begin with a “womp” Friday, with a line up that is jam-packed with a wide array of electronic artists.

There are plenty of house, dance and dubstep djs to see throughout the day. So many that they’re not even worth listing.

Several artists who have combined the extremely popular electronic music genre with psychedelic rock are sure to appeal to most “coasties.” STS9, Papadosio and EOTO are sure to turn out popular sets throughout the first day.

On the other hand, Saturday has a nice variety of music. Atmosphere, the main hip-hop headliner, will perform since for the first time in Chicago since October 2010. Here’s hoping that only the two original members, Slug and Ant, will be on stage, and not the full band they played with the last time at the Congress.

Chicago natives Umphrey’s McGee are one of the headliners who coming back for their second year at North Coast. Their performance will be one you don’t want to miss because these prog rockers always have something special prepared for the diehard fans in their home base.

Future Rock and Family Groove Company are also well-established rock groups from Chicago that you definitely don’t want to miss.

Sunday reverts back to more dance music, with a few acts that really stand out on the final day’s line up.

The fairly new, and very talented, electronic rock band Digital Tape Machine is a collaborative of seven musicians who are originally members of different groups around Chicago. They combine many different musical elements, with the help of a full band, including two keyboardists, and a DJ set-up, to create a live electronic sound that is all their own. It is very likely to debut songs from their highly anticipated first album, which will be released just in time for North Coast.

The quirky duo BoomBox also combines both electronic and rock elements, with a guitar and DJ table. Their set is sure to have a memorable set as well, if not for their funky music, then definitely for their flamboyant costumes, which typically includes feather boas and furry hats.

Electronic giant Derek Vincent Smith, better known as Pretty Lights, will close out the weekend to a large beat-hungry crowd.

There are also 17 official North Coast Music Festival After-Parties throughout the weekend to keep you grooving after the music stops in Union Park.

North Coast says it has several tricks up its sleeve, but will only reveal an improved Silent Disco, which will be a dome that holds more than 200 people.

Nearly everything gets better with age, and North Coast is sure to be bigger and better than ever for its third year.
