DePaul hosts Chicagoland basketball luncheon

ξ

With the 2012-13 NCAA basketball seasons quickly approaching, DePaul joined together with men’s and women’s teams from Chicago State, UIC, Loyola and Northwestern for the Chicago College Basketball Luncheon at Maggiano’s Little Italy, Friday.

DePaul’s head coaches Oliver Purnell and Doug Bruno were joined by their respective coaching staffs and players to discuss the upcoming season. Bruno thanked many people for his successes before sharing his excitement for the upcoming games.

“I think our basketball team has a chance to be pretty good, we have six returning players that had multiple minutes last year and then we have five newcomers,” said Bruno. “We’re really, really excited.”

The women are coming off a 2011-12 season in which they amassed a 23-11 overall record. They will be playing their first game Oct. 30 against St. Xavier to kick off the Maggie Dixon Classic.

On the men’s side, Purnell opened up by proudly introducing and showing appreciation for his staff members and players.

“This team has a tremendous amount of potential – I think the Big East, just like it has been in the past, is deep from top to bottom and we have a chance to get right up in the middle of that thing,” said Purnell.

The men will be entering this season with nine returning players, including their top three returning scorers Cleveland Melvin, Moses Morgan, and Brandon Young, along with six newcomers. Purnell also shared that he will be celebrating his 25th year as a head coach this season and wished all of the teams in attendance the best of luck. The men will open their season against Lewis at McGrath-Phillips Arena Nov. 3.

A moment of silence was also held for Chicago Tribune’s sports journalist, Bill Jauss, who passed away this past Wednesday.
