Pitt shuts down DePaul

Brandon Young com­piled 13 points, five re­bounds, five assists and three steals as DePaul fell at Pittsburgh, 93-55, Sat­urday afternoon. The Blue Demons shot just .277 from the field at the Petersen Events Center, losing their fifth conference matchup in six games.

Following an 8-7 lead, DePaul (10-9, 1-5) al­lowed Pittsburgh to jump out on a 15-4 run, build­ing a 10-point advantage in the first nine minutes. The Panthers shot 50 percent from the field, leading by as many as 26 points be­fore taking a 53-30 halftime lead.

Trey Zeigler paced Pittsburgh (17-4, 5-3) with 18 points off the bench. Lamar Patterson scored 15 and J.J. Moore contributed 10.

Moses Morgan added 11 points off the bench (3-6 from three), but was the only other Blue Demon to score double figures. Cleveland Melvin struggled mightily against the Panther defense, managing just sev­en points on 3-of-14 shoot­ing. He also grabbed seven rebounds.

Pittsburghdominated DePaul all game and took distinct advantages in a number of statistical cat­egories. The Panthers out­scored the Demons 48-16 in the paint, 16-7 on second-chance opportunities and 26-15 on the fastbreak. Pitt got a big boost from their bench, 52 of its 93 points coming from its bench.

The Blue Demons will next travel to St. John’s Wednesday night. The Red Storm knocked off DePaul, 71-62, last week at Allstate Arena. Wednesday’s game is scheduled for a 9 p.m. ET start at Carnesecca Arena.
