Weekend round up: September 27-29

Sunday officially marked the first day of Fall up here in the northern hemisphere. But with football, falling leaves and midterms getting ever closer, it seems we’ve all been in the Fall mindset for awhile now.

However, with a beautiful weekend forecast for Chicago, it’s time to ditch the sweaters and boots for the next few days and enjoy what all the city has to offer. Feeling like a foodie this weekend? Head over to Millennium Park on Saturday and Sunday for Chicago Gourmet presented by Bon Appetit.

The festival features live cooking demonstrations, tastings and book signings. Tons of local chefs from Chicago’s best restaurants will be at the festival including Colin Beauvais from Lincoln Park’s Franks ‘n” Dawgs, and Jonathan Fox from Firecakes Donuts. There’s also a large lineup of speakers from the food and beverage industry as well as seminars where you can learn the art of perfect food pairings. Tickets for the event are a bit pricey at $173.31 for a single day or $288.85 for a weekend pass, but worth it for any true gourmet food lover.

Need to get in one more concert that won’t require a coat check this year? Indie rockers, Phoenix will be visiting the Aragon Ballroom this Saturday, for what’s sure to be an awesome show. Although best known for their songs, “1901” and “Lisztomania”, the band’s on tour to support their recently released fifth album, “Bankrupt!”. The Vaccines will be opening the show which starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are still available for the show for $42 and can be ordered through the Aragon Ballroom’s website.

If you’re looking for a classic weekend plan, consider dining downtown and grabbing seats to a performance of “Evita” at the Oriental Theater. For those unaware, the musical is about the life of Eva Peron, from her rise from a girl living the Argentinian slums to becoming the first lady of the country. The show will only be in Chicago for 2 more weeks, so be sure to grab tickets soon. As with most Broadway in Chicago Shows, students can get rush tickets for Evita for $25 on the day of the performance. Also, belting out “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina” down Randolph Street after the performance is recommended, but not required.
