Blue Demon Makes Broadway Debut

DePaul Theatre School professor Dexter Bullard will direct film stars Paul Rudd and Michael Shannon in an upcoming Broadway production of “Grace.”

Bullard directed Shannon in a previous adaptation of “Grace” for Chicago’s Northlight Theatre in 2006. “Grace” is a play about an evangelical couple who plan to open a string of gospel hotels but later suffer from a crippling love triangle.

Bullard joins other DePaul-affiliated theater professionals who have landed on a Broadway stage, such as fellow director Scott Ellis and actors Joe Mantegna and John C. Reilly.

“While I count the experience as one of many artistic triumphs, it is exciting to get a chance to play at that level, be in Tony Award consideration and have national media attention,” Bullard told DePaul Newsline.

Starting in mid-August, Bullard will spend eight weeks in New York directing the play. “Grace” is scheduled to open Oct. 4, and Bullard will return to DePaul in mid-October.

DePaul Increases Donation Goal to $300 Million

After accumulating $250 million in donations two years ahead of schedule through the “Many Dreams, One Mission” campaign, DePaul’s Board of Trustees voted July 10 to increase the overall donation goal to $300 million.

The increased goal will go towards an additional $100 million in student scholarships and new construction projects, according to a DePaul Newsline report.

The university distributed more than $127 million in scholarships among 11,581 students during the 2010-2011 school year; according to DePaul’s Form 990, a publicly available tax form required for non-profit organizations.

In early March, DePaul’s Board of Trustees voted to raise tuition five percent for incoming freshman and 2.5 percent for current students. The funds gained from this increase will also go towards financial aid, which will raise to an estimated $160 million in the 2012-2013 school year.

Mayor Emanuel “Showed Interest” in a Chicago Location for New DePaul Stadium

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel reportedly “showed interest” in using public funds to aid the construction of a new multipurpose DePaul stadium in the city, 32nd Ward Ald. Scott Waguespack told Crain’s Chicago Business, Monday.

Waguespack said he talked with Emanuel about the stadium. “If you do it the right way, it can revitalize an area,” Waguespack told Crain’s, but also noted that “there are cases where it goes bad” and that “legislative bodies need to look more carefully at the deals they make.”

Emanuel’s office declined to comment.
