Former Mayor Jane Byrne was remembered Monday at St. Vincent de Paul Church by Chicagoans of all different backgrounds gathering for her funeral service.

The service, starting at 9 a.m., consisted of a visitation followed by the Mass. Those paying their respects included Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Attorney General Lisa Madigan, Obama strategist David Axelrod, Ald. Ed Burke (14th Ward), and Cook County Commissioner John Daley.

The Mass, which began at 11 a.m., was led by Monsignor Kenneth Velo, who described Byrne’s life as one of many different seasons. Emanuel also spoke, as did Kathy Byrne and her son Willy.

Fr. Dennis Holtschneider also participated in the services, reading the Gospel. Holtschneider has been on sabbatical since Aug. 1.

After the roughly hour and 20-minute Mass ended, Byrne’s casket was taken from the church to the hearse on Webster on a path lined with Chicago Police officers one side, and bagpipers on the other.

The party left the church about 15 minutes later led by a police escort.
