DePaul to host 2016 Big East Women’s Basketball Tournament

For the third straight season, DePaul will play host to the Big East women’s basketball tournament, the Big East and DePaul announced Wednesday.

“We are very excited to bring the 2016 Big East Women’s Basketball Tournament to DePaul University, whose capabilities and long-standing commitment to women’s basketball will ensure a first-class presentation and an exciting in-arena experience for our student-athletes, coaches and fans,” Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman said in a press release.

DePaul won the Big East regular season championship in 2014 and 2015, as well as both Big East tournaments in both of those years.

“The student-athletes representing all 10 Big Eas programs will be provided the opportunity to enjoy a tremendously memorable collegiate experience by staying and competing in downtown Chicago.” DePaul head coach Doug Bruno said in the release.

The tournament has not been played at an on-campus site since 2003, playing at the XL Center in Hartford, CT. from 2004-2013 and the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill. in 2014 and 2015.

All 10 teams from the conference will qualify for the tournament with the top six teams earning byes to the quarterfinals. The seven and 10 seeds, as well as the eight and nine seeds, will face off on March 5. The quarterfinals will take place March 6, the semifinals March 7 and the finals on March 8. The winner of the tournament will earn an automatic berth to the 2016 NCAA tournament.
