LGBT organizations host vigil for Transgender Day of Remembrance

Do you know someone hurt or killed because of anti-transgender hatred and prejudice?

DePaul LGBT organizations Spectrum DePaul and Trans*(formation) are hosting a Trans Vigil in honor of lives lost due to transgender and gender non-conformists hatred and prejudice, Nov. 14.

The vigil is also in honor of The Transgender Day of Remembrance, which according to Spectrum DePaul’s co-president Ariana Barreto, “began in response to the death of Rita Hester, a transgender African American woman who was murdered Nov. 28, 1998.”

“Now on Transgender Day of Remembrance, we honor those that have passed due to hate crimes and violence,” Barreto said. “Transgender Day of Remembrance raises public awareness of hate crimes against the Trans community that the media does not. Through the vigil we honor those who might otherwise be forgotten.”

The vigil will take place on the Lincoln Park Campus Quad at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14.

Both organizations hope the vigil provides an opportunity for students, staff, and faculty to “remember departed friends, loved ones and community members,” Barreto said. “The Day of Remembrance serves as an opportunity for our allies to step up with us and stand in vigil, memorializing those who have died from transgender hatred and violence.”
