1. The Arts of Life presents Fashion Forward at the Kinzie Corridor Gallery.

Saturday, Oct. 15

The Arts of Life will pay tribute to Chicago Artists Month from 4-8pm with this free exhibition of style-inspired and wearable art. All of the work on display came from the hands of local artists, and the Arts of Life band will provide the background noise. While feeling the inspiration, browse the new and used clothing on sale to benefit art programming. Check out www.artsoflife.org/events for more info.

2. We Are The City at Double Door (Dirtroom)

Saturday, Oct. 15

This British Columbia-bred, indie-prog threesome released their EP, “High School,” in the US last week. This Saturday is the kickoff for the band’s four-week tour. The music is driving and swirling, and unpretentiously effortless. For 5 bucks, you have no excuses, this is a must-see. Click www.doubledoor.com for tickets and www.wearethecity.ca for band info.

3. Poetry Foundation celebrates Chicago Ideas Week at Poetry Foundation

Saturday, Oct. 15

The newly conceived TED-esque Chicago Ideas Week is the motivation behind the Poetry Foundations series of talks relating the poetry. Some of the speakers include children’s poetry Laureate J. Patrick Lewis and poet Tony Hoagland. Each of the talks is just 18 minutes, but they should keep you thinking for quite a stretch longer. Visit www.poetryfoundation.org for details.

4. Chalk and Saltwater: The Ladder Project at the Neo-Futurarium

Thursdays-Saturdays through Oct. 22

This play, dating back to 1926, looks into the definition of failure and how it is viewed. The approach to the Neo-Futurists’ version welcomes and accepts failure as part of the show. Thursday nights are free with an addition to the pre- or post-show potluck, and the Chicago Reader was kind enough to throw in free beer for the show. Let me know if you can find an easier way to see live entertainment and drink on a tight budget. Check out www.neofuturists.org for info.

5. Saves the Day and Bayside at House of Blues

Thursday, Oct. 13

The two pop-punk emo bands share the House of Blues stage to show old followers and new fans their new jams. Saves the Day’s new album, “Daybreak,” will most likely be the featured album of their set and Bayside’s latest release, “Killing Time,” should also make a prominent statement. As much as the new stuff rocks, old favorites will for sure serve as the nights closers. Visit www.houseofblues.com for tickets.
