When it comes to melancholy, dream pop and lofi are my drugs of choice. As the days grow longer, so does my desire for those sunny melodies and airy vocals.
There’s something comforting about the uncertainty that spring inflicts. For many, it’s a time that marks the end of a school year, a quiet winter, or the first chapter in a calendar that’s just starting to feel familiar. I get that same feeling of uncertainty from the sound of dream pop. It hurts in a good way, like rereading a letter you saved from your grandparents or your first love.
These Chicago winters tend to numb my senses, but melancholic tracks are like the May flowers sprouting from April showers. The dreamy chords and nostalgic lyrics spark some sort of introspection that — like bare branches beginning to show green again — help emerge my feelings from a dormancy.
Spring melancholy isn’t devastation, it’s the quiet waiting for change. So open a window, break out your journal and throw on May Melancholy DeJamz.
