Now 8-1 in the Big East conference, the DePaul women’s basketball team continue to lead in the ranks after a 96-50 win against Providence. Double-digit performances came from seniors, Megan Podkowa and Chanise Jenkins, junior, Jacqui Grant, sophomore, Amarah Coleman and freshman, Anita Allen with 16, 11, 10, 10 and 10, respectively.

The Blue Demons began the first half on top as they found themselves leading 54-25. Though they started the first quarter at 13-7, they eventually crept up the scoreboard to leave the Friars in the dust.

DePaul was 60 percent for field goals, in comparison to Providence’s 40 percent. But it was their free throw attempts that didn’t prove to be much of a threat with only 58 percent against the Friars’ 75 percent.

Providence refused to go down without a fight as they found leaders in freshman, Maddie Jolin and junior, Sarah Beal, who each had 12 and 9 points, respectively. The two appeared to be the only ones who had a chance at slowing down the Blue Demons, with both aggressive steals and rebounds.

Still, the Blue Demons took advantage of their intimidation with fearless drives and three-point attempts.

It seemed as if the third half only increased DePaul’s energy, as the student-filled crowd amped up the team after their continuous three-pointers. They stood at 9-20, with the Friars only catching a mere 27 percent.

The Blue Demons eventually made up for their lack of free throw executions in the first half with 57 percent over the Friars’ 40 percent.

Finishing off the last half with a roaring crowd behind them, DePaul only continued to prove their place in the Big East as a force to be reckoned with.

The Blue Demons will face off against Seton Hall this Friday at McGrath-Phillips Arena. The Pirates currently stand at 6-3 in the Big East, as DePaul looks to continue their win streak.
