No. 3 DePaul Hockey Club came up short in the final round of the single-elimination ACHA DII Central Region regional tournament Sunday after losing 5-1 to No. 9 University of Michigan. DePaul, who hosted the tournament, started off well, winning their first-round game 8-4 against No. 10 St. Cloud State on Saturday at Northshore Ice Arena. The game featured hat tricks from both Taylor Paine, who is third in the division in goals with 41, and Billy Allen, who leads the team in points with 29 goals and 37 assists on the season.
Andy Ritter and Kurt Akers also scored to give DePaul a four-goal victory. Akers, who was handed a game disqualification with just over two minutes left after a fight with St. Cloud State’s Evan Larson, sat out the matchup against Michigan.
With Michigan leading 4-0 on Saturday, Tony Klonowski, defenseman, scored DePaul’s lone goal on a power play in the second period. However, that would be the team’s last goal of the game and season, after their 5-1 loss to the No. 9 Wolverines, who knocked off No. 4 Lindenwood in the first round Friday, put an end to their nationals run.
