Men’s basketball’s freshman Cleveland Melvin will miss the remainder of the 2010-11 season with a left thumb sprain, Head Coach Oliver Purnell announced Monday.
Melvin, who leads Big East freshmen with an average of 14.3 points per game, injured his thumb during DePaul’s 76-51 road loss to St. John’s on Feb. 23 and sat out Saturday’s home matchup against USF, an 86-76 loss.
After being named Big East Rookie of the Week four times, Melvin is now a Big East Rookie of the Year candidate. In league play, Melvin averages 17.4 points.
He has reached double-figures in 19 games and tallied at least 20 points in eight games.
