Optimism is usually how Cinderella stories begin.
After a 7-22 finish last season, the DePaul volleyball team is turning heads. Their rejuvenated roster and newly developed team chemistry is paving the way for what could be their best season in five years.
DePaul finished second in the Rambler Challenge last week, defeating opponents UNC Upstate and Chicago State before losing a heartbreaker to host Loyola University in Chicago. Despite the loss in the finals, head coach Nadia Edwards understands the tools her team needs to master in anticipation of a tough Big East Conference schedule.
“The team played pretty well last weekend,” said Edwards. “There were some small goals that we met, like working on our side that we were able to accomplish.”
As the Blue Demons gear up for Big East play, Edwards is not intimidated by DePaul’s brutal conference schedule.
“We prepare for all of our matches very much alike,” said Edwards. “The focus is always going to be on us. We go into every match knowing our records are the same.”
Outside hitter Vesela Zapryanova has provided her energy and self-described craziness on the court since her arrival from Auburn University prior to this season. She mentioned that the team’s attitude in practice would be the key to its success going into conference play.
“We have to go out there and play with energy and heart,” said Zapryanova, who gave credit to her teammates’ relentless attitude in practice.
The junior received her third all-tournament nomination this season after the Rambler Challenge, and was added to the Big East Honor Roll this week – the first Blue Demon volleyball player since Sarah Cullen in 2008 to receive that honor.
