“Into the Groove” by Madonna

Eighties night at Holiday Club HATES to see me coming. I was first introduced to this song by the eighties cult classic “Desperately Seeking Susan” — thank you to English 101 with Kathleen Rooney for introducing me to this campy film that’s now one of my favorites. There’s no greater joy than dancing in Uptown with your favorite diva and an Angry Orchard in hand. This song’s the cherry on top.

“Dreams” by Fleetwood Mac

My personal favorite in the repertoire of the Rose’s Lounge jukebox. Though “Rumors” is as old as my parents down to the year, no other album has transfixed me like this one. My go-to homework jam is just as easily a song I could sway to for hours in the little, run-down dive just blocks from campus. You never know what Blue Demon you might run into under the Christmas lights.

“Red Wine Supernova” by Chappell Roan

Have you even lived if you’ve never given a full throttle living room performance of Chappell Roan’s freshman album, drunk off of Barefoot’s pride-themed prosecco just hours before the St. Patrick’s Day river dyeing… just me? It was cathartic as it was silly and definitely a memory I’ll never forget. Hot tip: There’s no better way to start St. Paddy’s Day than being sardined into a Brown Line car.

“End of Beginning” by Djo

Yes… the song about Chicago written by a The Theatre School alum… so original. But c’mon, let me live! It’s a great song and he totally should’ve been the FEST headliner. Whenever I'm in a rut, this song always brings me back, because no matter how bad it gets, I’m still in Chicago. Being depressed in Chicago beats being depressed in the suburbs anyday. What’s more cathartic than listening to this on a Brown Line train over the river, smiling ear to ear?

“Born to Die” by Lana Del Rey

The sad girl queen herself didn’t make it onto my playlist last year, so this time around I knew she had to have a spot. While this seems like anything but a mood-booster, it reminds me of making a fool of myself trying to sing it at karaoke — once again at my tried-and-true Holiday Club — after finishing an issue of the very paper you’re reading right now. If you’re already musically challenged, do not — I repeat, do not — try to sing Born to Die. But hey, who hasn’t made a fool of themselves with an audience of coworkers.
