Walk the Moon plays winter concert in Student Center

After months of voting, DePaul students selected Cincinnati indie rock band Walk the Moon as this year’s Winter Concert artist. The band, known for their hit “Anna Sun,” performed a lively and energetic set at the Student Center Feb. 12 following their sold out show at the Metro, but also revealed their musical unoriginality, and why they are nothing more than the poor man’s Foster the People.

The band opened their set with the synth electro pop “Quesadilla” and quickly established their energetic and free spirited style, which carried over throughout the entire show. They strongly encouraged crowd participation.

During the song “Me and all My Friends,” singer Nicholas Petricca started a call and response to the lyrics “me and my all friends said/come on over now,” which excited the audience as they screamed back the lyrics. During the encore, “I Can Lift A Car,” Petricca encouraged all audience members to let out their inner stress and freely express themselves by waving their arms in the air, which was a great way of releasing the stress of midterms. His energy was initially infectious, especially when he encouraged audience members to “shake their booty.”

This carefree and energetic presence, while initially highly entertaining, quickly became monotonous, as every single song and beat had little to no variation in tonal quality and sound. The audience participation too, began to feel forced, as during every single song, guitarist Eli Maiman attempted to start an audience clap-a-long, which quickly dwindled after the first few seconds. This might have also been a result of the lack of people in the audience, many of who were unfamiliar with Walk the Moon’s music and stumbled upon the show.

Yet, while the Walk the Moon concert was not one of the best musically, the band’s energy and excited performance was a great way to end the midterm stress.
