    Dropkick Murphys arrive in style

Celtic punk rock group Dropkick Murphys are set to release their new album “Going Out In Style” on March 1, and it is pretty damn good.Being their sixth album, “Going Out In Style” retains the classic Dropkick sound mixing punk rock with melodic Irish storytelling of man, country, working down at the docks, and whiskey. And it cleverly does this through a mixture of fast and slow-paced songs such as “Hang ‘Em High” and “Going Out In Style,” with “Cruel” and “Broken Hymns,” respectively.

A keynote of this album is the second to last song, “Peg O’ My Heart,” featuring vocal support from Bruce Springsteen. Dropkick and Springsteen have maintained a healthy relationship through their careers and the “fact that his vocals are on our new song is great,” said Dropkick guitarist Tim Brennan.

But for a band this seasoned and established in their career with such a defined sound, we really need to look at the album as a whole. “Going Out In Style,” in this sense, is much like “The Meanest of Times” and previous releases, but nevertheless still delivers.

Bad Religion, on the other hand, has kept similar styles across albums like “Against The Grain” and “Generator” but also have varied through darker and lighter, faster and slower albums. And having been around for 30 years, they still truly deliver.

Having released many albums, EPs, singles, splits and live albums, this one is nothing new, but not necessarily a bad thing. It is still nearly impossible to see Dropkick varying its style, so if you are looking for another catchy album, this is exactly what you are going to get.

And if you cannot wait until March 1, watch the videos promoting a song a day for 13 days as part of Dropkick Murphys’ “13 Days of Going Out In Style” campaign on Facebook. I have always been a fan and respect them hugely for their work, and even more so for putting on a hell of a live show. Chicago is no Boston on St. Patrick’s Day, but “the [Chicago] crowd makes it feel like Boston,” Brennan said.

The band will be playing on Feb. 26 with Off With Their Heads and Naked Raygun, and on Feb. 27 with Off With Their Heads and Against Me! at the Congress Theater. Tickets are still available and the show will be featuring songs off of “Going Out In Style.
