The staff of The DePaulia was honored as a Best All-Around Non Daily Student Newspaper national finalist by the Society of Professional Journalists’ Mark of Excellence awards. This is the first time the paper has placed nationally for SPJ’s awards.
Previously, DePaul student media was honored with seven regional SPJ Mark of Excellence awards, and The DePaulia was named finalists in five regional categories. National winners were chosen from 12 regional winners in each category by journalism professionals.
The multimedia sports package, “More than a decade of drought: An oral history of the 2003-04 Blue Demons” was also named a national finalist in Online Sports Reporting. The story, written by Editor-in-Chief Matthew Paras with multimedia support from Multimedia Editor Mariah Woelfel and Digital Managing Editor Kirsten Onsgard, details the last DePaul men’s basketball team to reach the NCAA tournament.
