Naming a child is sometimes the most difficult task you and your partner must go through during
pregnancy. For nine months the couple and their friends and family look through baby name
books and research online to give their child the perfect name. After all, their name will stay with
them forever-unless they legally change it.
In Hashtag Jameson’s case, it would not be surprising if at a young age she demanded her
name be changed to something more traditional. Hashtag’s mother is slightly delusional and
undoubtedly obsessed with Twitter.
She announced her newborn’s arrival via Facebook (surprisingly not on Twitter), and under the
baby’s photo the caption was, “”Hashtag Jameson was born at 10 oclock last nite. She weys
8pounds and i luv her so much!!!!!”
It is obvious that the mother, who remains a mystery, is not the best speller and maybe it was “a
very unfortunate typo,” as Huffington Post put it.
Even though Hashtag Jameson may be a prank, her rival, “Facebook,” is real. According to ABC
news, an Egyptian father named his daughter Facebook because this particular social media site
had a tremendous impact on the Egyptian Revolution.
At least his choice had a meaning behind it, but the parents who named their baby “Like,” after
the Facebook button seem to be going off the deep end.
CBS reported that the Israeli parents who named their baby “Like,” think it is “modern and
innovative.”
“It’s short and sweet…it’s very important to me and to my husband that the names we give our
children are unique, creative and totally new,” said Vardit Adler, Like’s mother, to the Israeli
newspaper Ha’aretz.
Names such as Like, Facebook and Hashtag are not rare cases of parents giving their baby’s
strange names, but odd names have been around for centuries.
According to Ancestry.ca, Canadians have named their children: Horse love, Church Blessed,
Queen Brittain, Happy Newyear Kerwenyee and Myholy Cupid.
Now with the rise of the digital age, parents have more to choose from so they can hop on the
weird baby names bandwagon.
Let us also not forget that celebrities are known for giving their offspring unusual names such as
Blue Ivy, Audio Science, Moon Unit Zappa and Pilot Inspetktor.
I understand that celebrities want to give their kids cool names, but what about regular people
whose kids attend public school? Just imagine how awkward roll call will be for the child who is
named something crazy like Snow or Apple.
“Parents should think about their baby’s name a bit more carefully because I sure as hell wouldn’t
want to be made fun of for having a stupid name,” said Kyle Cornille, 22, of Edgewater.
Call me old fashioned, but when I will be thinking of baby names I will stick with the traditional
ones. I, for one, do not want my kid hating me.
