Q&A with Australian songstress Lenka

Australian songstress Lenka cheered up the airways in 2008 with her hit “The Show.” Since then she has been busy, released two more albums, started her own record label Skipalong Records and gave birth to her first child, Quinn. This past June, she released her third studio album “Shadows” and this Friday, July 26, she’ll be performing at Schubas.

The Weekend Edition had an email interview with Lenka. Check out what she has to say about her new album below.

Weekend Edition: You’ve described your new album “Shadows” as a dreaming album, what dream inspired you while creating “Shadows”?

Lenka:The dream that I could connect my subconscious with my listeners’ subconscious through lullaby music.

WE: How would you compare “Shadows” sound to your previous two albums?

Lenka:It is a bit slower, folkier, more mellow and more indie sounding.

WE: Could you describe the experience of releasing “Shadows” on your own label Skipalong Records? How did the creative freedom compare to the new responsibilities?

Lenka:It is a lot of work, but at the same time very liberating. For this kind of record, it’s been amazing.

WE: “Shadows” sounds very lullaby-like and the lyrics feel immensely personal and emotional. Did you record the album with that sound as the goal, or did it develop naturally?

Lenka: I did have the goal of making a dreamy, lullaby album. I love those kind of records… The emotions and personal lyrics came about because of what I was going through. I think the pregnancy hormones may have affected that!

WE: What’s your favorite song off of the album?

Lenka:“Two Heartbeats” because it has (my baby) Quinn’s “in-utero” heartbeat in the track.

WE: What should fans going to your concert this Friday at Schubas expect from your performance?

Lenka:The set is really beautiful and chilled-out, but with a more energetic section towards the end. I have live strings on this run, so the music is given a more emotional quality because of that.
