Stephen Colbert to replace Letterman on ‘Late Show’

Coming hot off the heels of racial controversy, CBS announced today via Twitter that Stephen Colbert will replace David Letterman as host of “The Late Show.” Letterman announced his retirement last week, saying he will leave “The Late Show” next year.

Colbert has hosted the satirical news show “The Colbert Report” on Comedy Central since 2005. He became known for his ultra-conservative alter ego on that show, often ridiculing guests and promoting a comedic cult of personality around himself. He was recently in the news for what some interpreted as a racially insensitive remark made via the show’s Twitter account, which prompted widespread criticism via the “#CancelColbert” campaign. This controversy did little to derail Colbert as the frontrunner of possibilities to replace Letterman.

A press release from CBS regarding the announcement has yet to be published.
