No. 23 and No.7 seed DePaul women’s basketball have the opportunity to advance to the Sweet Sixteen in the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2011, but first they must take on No. 9 and No. 2 seed Duke Monday at Cameron Indoor Stadium, the home of the Blue Devils.
The two teams last met in the Sweet Sixteen in 2011 with Duke advancing, 70-63. Las Vegas odds makers have the Blue Demons a 9 Î_-point underdog. DePaul and Duke face off at 5:30 p.m. CST. on ESPN 2.
What to watch for: Can DePaul contain Duke’s size? The Blue Demons have to be competitive rebounding the basketball. They are a much smaller team and can’t let Duke get repeated looks at second-chance points. Duke dominated Winthrop in the first round, outscoring the Eagles 42-6 in the paint. Rebounding will be the key.
X-Factor: Jasmine Penny. Penny is DePaul’s tallest player at 6-foot-1. She is also the team’s best finisher inside the paint, converting 57 percent of her field goals. Penny was in foul trouble against Oklahoma and had trouble finding a rhythm. It’s crucial that she gets her looks inside against Duke so DePaul’s guards can maintain being a threat on the outside.
DePaul will win if…they can control Duke forward Elizabeth Williams in the post and Duke guard Tricia Liston on the perimeter. Liston is Duke’s leading scorer, scoring 17.4 points per game, and Elizabeth Williams isn’t far behind with 13.9 points per game. Duke’s offense revolves around those two players and if DePaul can contain them, DePaul’s guards can get out in transition to score. DePaul’s guard play matches up very well considering that Duke lacks a point guard after Alexis Jones and Chelsea Gray are out for the season due to injuries.
Prediction: DePaul is 2-6 historically in second round games. Duke presents a massive challenge with their size and methodical movement of the basketball on offense. Unfortunately, DePaul’s run is likely to end in Durham.
86-78 Duke
