The 2014 Oscar nominees were announced this morning, and the Academy was full of surprises as usual.
Some very notable performances from this year were snubbed: The Cohen brothers’ “Inside Llewyn Davis” was passed over completely, not even picking up a nom for best original song from the most music-centric film of the year. The film’s only mention is in the cinematography and sound mixing categories.
Other notable omissions include: Joaquin Phoenix absent from the best actor category for his performance in “Her,” Emma Thompson for “Saving Mr. Banks” and Tom Hanks in “Captain Phillips.”
David O. Russell’s “American Hustle” and Alfonso CuarêÑÔ_n’s “Gravity” lead the pack with 10 nominations — “American Hustle” is the only the only film of the year to have an actor nominated in each of their respective categories. Steve McQueen’s “12 Years a Slave” follows closely behind with nine.
