Get to know your editors: Summer Concepcion

Hi there! My name is Summer Concepcion. I am a junior studying journalism and the Online Editor for The DePaulia.

I wanted to be Online Editor because I love how our website is an ever-changing platform that we can use to build our audience.

When I’m not in school or working on the paper, I’m most likely constantly listening to music, going to concerts, being a foodie, and going to different places and events around the city for the sake of exploring.

On a Saturday night I’m probably at a concert, or satisfying whatever food cravings I have by going out to eat, or simply just hanging out with friends while enjoying what the city has to offer.

My favorite thing about DePaul is its city vibe. I’m originally from LA, but I’ve grown to love Chicago by how DePaul insists that the city is its campus. Also, I feel like I meet a variety of people from all types of backgrounds. The connections DePaul offers in Chicago and beyond is what drew me here in the first place.

It’s hard to choose a best class at DePaul thus far because I’ve been very lucky with a lot of the classes I’ve had. Though if I had to choose, my Discover Chicago: Race, Gender and Justice in Chicago class will always be near and dear to my heart. It was the first college class I ever had, and it taught me so much about the city as well as the injustices people face every day. It even inspired me to take up a minor in sociology. (Also, professor Owen Daniel-McCarter is one of my favorite people ever for so many reasons that words cannot fully explain.)

I love eating pizza while I’m at The DePaulia office. 🙂

I’m secretly (but not that secretly) obsessed with the band Muse. Anyone who knows me well knows that I know everything about them. You bet that I’m constantly anticipating the next time I will see them live (three times so far!).

You can’t take me away from my music collection – from my iTunes library to my collection of CDs and vinyl records.

This summer, I’ve been regularly updating the website while interning at the Chicago Reader and working at the DePaul Honors Program office. In my free time, I’ve gone to street and music festivals which have included Pitchfork and soon will include Lollapalooza and a plethora of other concerts.

I can’t wait for the school year to begin because I miss all of my friends – which includes The DePaulia staff, of course! I can’t wait to reunite with friends and make new ones. Plus, I have a good amount of concerts lined up so I’m super excited about that as well. I have a feeling that this upcoming school year is going to be the best yet.
