System Shock 2 was re-released for the first time in more than 13 years last week on Good Old Games (GOG), the popular online distributor of classic PC games. The space-horror RPG has been the most requested title on GOG for four years.
Released back in 1999, the game sold poorly despite critical acclaim. In the years following its release it has achieved cult status among gamers and critics and has constantly appeared in countless “best games of all time” lists (including our own).
Shortly after it was released, the games developer, Looking Glass Studios, shut its doors and the rights to the game’s name and code ended up tangled in a messy legal web which kept it from being re-released.
Original copies could be found on websites such as eBay, with brand new copies going for $200. But even if one were to obtain an original copy, compatibility issues would make it difficult to run on modern computers.
GOG secured the rights to the game for an exclusive digital re-release and has patched the game to run flawlessly on today’s computers. Many fan mods that made improvements to the original game are also compatible with the re-release.
GOG has also included various bonuses with the game including the game’s original soundtrack, manual, creator interview, wallpapers, two concept maps, and even the game’s original pitch document. Without a doubt, this is the definitive version of the game.
System Shock 2 is available for download for $10 from GOG.com and is compatible with Windows XP, Vista, 7, and 8.
