Well, we’re almost through our first month of 2026, and it has been eventful. I tend to be far too indecisive to get my New Year’s resolutions in on time. But the music I listen to often dictates how I live my life. In lieu of a resolution, here are some songs that I want to influence my 2026 — and the vibes we’re bringing with us into this new year. Better late than never, right?
“You Got Lucky” by Tom Petty
I’m starting basic. I don’t know about you, but 2025 was not my luckiest year. In 2026, I’m determined to make my own luck. That’s not really the message of this song, which takes more of a passive-aggressive spurned-lover perspective, but I love Tom Petty and any year would not be complete without him. So here’s to personal growth and hard work, with a sprinkling of good luck.
“So Easy (To Fall In Love)” by Olivia Dean
I’m thrilled to see Olivia Dean getting her flowers. But as a longtime listener, I am fighting all my gatekeeping instincts. That being said, “So Easy” is such a gorgeous listen, and I’m obsessed with the idea of falling in love with ourselves. And while I personally think it’s a little easier to fall in love with Olivia Dean than the average person, I’m determined to take a page out of her book and show myself some love this year. As RuPaul says, “If you can’t love yourself, how in the hell are you gonna love somebody else?”
“Dashboard” by Modest Mouse
Another group that I simply love, Modest Mouse is always a fun listen. “Dashboard” is, in some ways, about looking on the bright side — even when it’s not looking great. “Well, the dashboard melted, but we still have the radio” is a mantra I want to live by. As long as we’ve got good music and a car that drives (or, you know, the Brown Line), we can make things work.
“Do Ya Wanna Taste It” by Wig Wam
I must admit that I found this song while watching James Gunn’s “Peacemaker” on a night when some friends and I decided we needed to learn the opening credits dance. Until writing this piece, I’d never really paid attention to the lyrics, and I’ve decided to keep it that way. I’m keeping this song as a slightly nonsensical but super fun listen — and I’m hoping to keep it with me throughout a similarly themed year.
“Go Your Own Way” by Fleetwood Mac
Finally, I couldn’t create a playlist without a little Fleetwood Mac. If I did make a vague New Years’ resolution, it would be to stay truer to myself and my beliefs. It’s definitely something I’m working on, and I’m trying to be more okay with standing up for my needs and beliefs — even if that means walking my own way. Thank god I have Fleetwood Mac to walk alongside me.
