Brittany Hrynko’s last Big East game near her hometown of Philadelphia was ruined Friday as No. 25 DePaul women’s basketball was upset 79-76 in overtime at Villanova.
Hrynko’s 29 points weren’t enough to overcome the combination of Villanova center Emily Leer and guard Caroline Coyer, who had 25 points and 23 points respectively. It was another game where DePaul (9-5, 1-1 Big East) blew a late lead with under a minute to go.
The Blue Demons led 74-70 with 54 seconds left, but Villanova (6-7, 1-1) capitalized on their next two possessions. The Wildcats cut it to two when Coyer hit a pair of free throws after being fouled by guard Jessica January. Hrynko then missed a layup with 11 seconds left, letting Leer score on the next basket.
In overtime, DePaul went 0-12 from the field and scored their only points with a pair of free throws. This was the third overtime game the Blue Demons lost this season, losing both to Northwestern and No. 2 Notre Dame at McGrath-Phillips Arena.
DePaul led previously by as many as 14 in the first half, and led 37-30 at halftime. They finished the game shooting 40.8 percent.
The Blue Demons next play Sunday at 5 p.m. at Georgetown.
