It took essentially all 40 minutes of game time for the DePaul Blue Demons (4-14 overall, 1-6 Big East) to earn their first conference win of the season over the Georgetown Hoyas (9-7 overall, 2-5 Big East) on Saturday.
Georgetown won the opening tip, and a quick bucket gave them the lead just seconds into the game, but the Blue Demons were able to stay in it, even when they faced a double-digit deficit mid-way through the second quarter.
“A great win for our ladies,” coach Jill M. Pizzotti said following the comeback win. “Really proud of the resiliency they showed today. We got down 11 in the second quarter, and the energy and the competitiveness and the aggressiveness that they showed going down the stretch of this game … great, great job by our ladies.”
In a game that featured 11 lead changes in the final minutes of the fourth quarter, DePaul needed several players to step up to secure the home victory, including guard Aizhanique Mayo, who scored eight of her 11 points in the fourth quarter of her first game back from injury since a Nov. 26 loss against Loyola-Chicago.
“It felt great being out there with my teammates,” Mayo said post-game. “And obviously great to get this first win.”
The junior guard converted three of her five attempts, all from deep, while adding two makes from the free throw line and a pair of assists.
“It was something that we needed as a team, and I was able to put the ball in the basket for my team in crucial moments,” Mayo said of her fourth quarter performance. “I was happy that worked in our favor.”
Fellow guard Natiah Nelson similarly had a clutch performance, adding nearly half of her 14 total points in the game’s final quarter while leading the team with three steals.
“Defense is really what gets me going,” Nelson said. “Last year I had to work my way up and defense was the thing that got me on the court. Right now, that’s the biggest role that I play; making sure I get stops for my team. It was just great to have everyone feeding off my energy.”
Nelson’s defensive performance ended up being a crucial aspect of the team’s win, especially when looking at the 29 points that the Blue Demons were able to record off of turnovers.
“Everybody played their part and did what they needed to do, did their due diligence,” Nelson said of her defensive role. “We got the job done.”
Several players stepped up down the stretch during the team’s comeback, including Mayo and Nelson, but graduate forward Meg Newman made two of the most clutch plays, a go-ahead layup and a defensive rebound with under a minute left.
“I’m just really happy for Meg to be able to execute in those moments. She’s put in a lot of time in college basketball and it hasn’t been easy,” Pizzotti said. “To have her out there and have her hit that big bucket, have her defensive presence, have her get that rebound, I’m really happy for her and happy for our team.”
It certainly took a team effort and a few gutsy plays for the Blue Demons to erase their double-digit deficit and hold on in the final moments, reminiscent of another Chicag0-based team in the Bears, a fitting comparison as Pizzotti, a Lombard, Illinois native, swapped her normal game day attire for a Walter Payton jersey in anticipation of the teams’ wild-card game just a few hours later.
“I was a huge Walter Payton fan growing up, and I was excited to represent and give my support to the Bears today,” Pizzotti said. “Fans of Chicago get excited for their teams, and it’s just fun to be a part of a sports city. Alayna (West) was really excited I wore this jersey and Ally Timm was not. They’re our two Wisconsin girls. One loves the Bears and one loves the other team.”
While Pizzotti may be in for another down-to-the-wire game just hours after ushering her squad to their first win since Dec. 11, her next game with the team she coaches comes Jan. 13 in a road match against Xavier. The game will air on ESPN+.
