It was a rainy and cold day, with threats of a tornado looming outside, but within The Metro, The Lovely Bad Things and Best Coast, both from California, brought out summertime feelings through their laid back sets at their show on Sept. 18.
The Lovely Bad Things could not have been a better choice to open for the laid-back California band, as they could also match that description. The band takes it a step further, though, and masterfully pulls off a mix of mellow songs and energetic hits. Although most of the audience was unfamiliar with their work at the start of their set, there was a very small chance that they wouldn’t look The Lovely Bad Things up when they got home.
The band was a burst of fun, and the excitement they had to be playing at the Metro shone through in their performance. In addition to their energetic stage presence, Lovely Bad Things are really good, despite their name somehow referencing otherwise. All of the musicianship within their songs went together exceptionally well, especially the dual vocals in many of their songs, which work together perfectly, especially in their new song “Teenage Grown Ups.” While most people were at the show attended for Best Coast, it was hard not to be incredibly impressed with the opening act.
In between each song Best Coast played it was impossible not to hear screams of “I love you, Bethany!” The singer and guitarist of the band is understandably incredibly popular and appealing for the largely female audience. Through her relatable subject material in her songs, sarcastic tweets and Instagram posts of her watching “Seinfeld” in bed, it’s near impossible to dislike Cosentino. While other female musicians and singers post pictures of them living their near-perfect lives (calling you out Beyonce and Gwen Stefani), Cosentino is relatable and funny. It’s incredibly refreshing and leads to the devotion that she receives from fans.
On top of Cosentino being adored based on her personality, Best Coast’s music is incredible as well. Their latest release, “California Nights,” has received positive reviews from both critics and fans. Best Coast didn’t shy away from playing a huge mix of songs from their three studio albums, and their most recent EP “Fade Away,” and all of them were received well by the crowd, who didn’t stop dancing and jumping around throughout the entirety of Best Coast’s fantastic hour-and-a-half long set.
