The DePaul men’s basketball team announced a new assistant coach on staff Tuesday, adding Renard Phillips.
Phillips joins head coach Oliver Purnell’s staff after being the varsity head coach at Friendship Collegiate Academy in Washington, D.C. Phillips also has coaching experience on the AAU level, working as a coach with the DC Assault and the Blue Devil programs from 2005 to 2008.
“(Phillips’) role will be the role of all our assistants,” Purnell said. “He’ll be involved in scouting opponents and on the floor coaching in practice. In particular, he’ll have a critical role in recruiting as we look to put together another good recruiting class in 2014 and beyond.”
Phillips replaces Brian Ellerbe, who was dismissed in April. Purnell indicated that more changes would be coming to the coaching staff.
“We’re definitely looking to make one or two more changes,” Purnell said. “We want to shake things up, take a long look into the mirror and look at things we didn’t do so well and look at things we can do better. We’re in the process of evolving and getting to the point where we’re settled. In terms of players and staff, by the middle of summer we’ll be pretty much where we’re going to be.”
