Blue Demon tennis athletes earn Big East accolades

In the final week of the regular season, a pair of Blue Demon tennis players earned Big East Player of the Week honors.

On the women’s side, Blue Demon senior Patricia Lancranjan led a finally healthy women’s squad to a perfect 2-0 week with wins against conference rivals Marquette on Saturday in Milwaukee followed by a triumph over Butler on Sunday. Against Marquette, Lancranjan defeated the Golden Eagle’s No. 1 singles player Paula Tormos Sanchez 6-4, 6-4. The next day, she defeated Butler’s Lauren Ghidotti 6-3, 6-2 to couple an individually perfect weekend with her team’s perfect 2-0 record.

On the men’s side of things, sophomore Boris Spanjaard also won Big East Player of the Week honors for his performance against Marquette on Saturday. The Netherlands native prevailed 7-5, 6-4 in a singles match over the Golden Eagles Alvaro Verdu. He also scored a 6-2 doubles victory while teamed up with Alex Galoustian.

Spanjaard is now 21-15 overall this season, but has peaked when it matters finishing 8-2 in his last 10 matches.

It’s tournament time now for both the men’s and women’s programs. The No. 1 seeded men will open up the Big East Tournament against No. 8 seeded Villanova Friday at 11:30 a.m. Meanwhile, the No. 2 seeded Blue Demon women’s team begins action on Friday as well when they play the winner of Creighton and Providence at 8 a.m. The venue for both tournaments is the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center in Cayce, S.C.
