DePaul’s return to the gridiron was less than impressive as they fell to the Loyola Ramblers 30-6 on Sunday afternoon.
The Blue Demons would get off to a fast start, forcing the first of three turnovers they would have on the afternoon. However, they would give the ball back to Loyola after sophomore quarterback Connor Skelly threw an interception, giving the Ramblers a short field to set up their first score.
Turnovers and penalties would doom the team in its inaugural game, as they coughed up the football a total of eight times, resulting in five scoring opportunities for Loyola.
Considering the time of possession was nearly half of their opponents, the defense held their own with Linebackers Matt Bodine and Alex Smith making it hard on the Ramblers running attack nearly every play.
Offensively, the Demons will have to sweep this performance under the rug as they completed just six passes between quarterbacks Skelly and Serrano.
Running back John Beale ran hard and logged 31 yards on 10 carries.
Not all was lost for DePaul on Sunday as they managed to get on the board with a 24-yard touchdown catch by Demetrio Serrano, thrown to him by Ed Serrano – who the Demons feature in a Wildcat-esque formation.
The Demons will be back on the gridiron and looking for their first victory this Saturday, Oct. 4, at Oakland University.
