What’s Fresh on Netflix

“It’s Bruno!”

This offbeat New York City-set comedy starts off telling the audience that this “is a comedy about a man and his dog.” And while that’s technically true, “It’s Bruno!” is so much more than that. It follows Malcolm, an overinvolved dog owner, as he attempts to ensure that the people in and around his neighborhood pay his dog Bruno the respect he deserves.

This eventually leads the two of them into a slew of confrontations with other dogs and their owners, neighbors and anyone else who doesn’t acknowledge Bruno’s superiority in the area. Not only is the show funny; it also provides a whopping dose of cute dogs, led of course by Bruno himself, a fawn pug-beagle mix with big, welcoming eyes who steals at least one-third of the screen time per episode.

So far, Netflix has only released eight 15-minute episodes as part of the first season, leaving audiences undoubtedly wanting more — more Bruno, especially.

“Tuca & Bertie”

Similar to the “animals are people, just go with it” understanding of “Bojack Horseman,” “Tuca & Bertie” follows two birds in their 30s who are best friends and live in the same apartment building, voiced by Tiffany Haddish and Ali Wong, respectively.

Haddish and Wong are decidedly different comedians with very different comedy styles, which is expertly reflected in the contrasting characters that they voice. Definitely more offbeat than its animated sitcom counterparts, “Tuca & Bertie” is a lighthearted look at adult female friendships that is certainly not for kids.

It may take some time to get used to, but after one episode you’ll know if this show is right for you. If you’re anything like me, it likely will be.
