Danzuka Yuiga’s “Brand New Landscape” is a delicate introspection into the evaporation of a family dynamic, making you want to root for them to work it out. The film explores the relationship between a father and his two kids after not speaking for years, since the father’s decision to leave a family vacation early to continue his architectural work overseas, and the death of his wife. Although the story depicts the complicated relationship between an absent father and his kids, it misses the opportunity to delve into the intricacies of these dynamics. As a result, I felt that the film failed to create a connection between the audience and the characters, so I couldn’t fully empathize with the son’s conflicted feelings toward his father. However, the cinematography is absolutely gorgeous, with the use of bright colors and the way the imagery subtly foreshadows the narrative.
