The northbound CTA service was shut down at 3:17 p.m. Monday because of reports of smoke and fire. All transportation was rerouted to the elevator track between Fullerton and Chinatown. If commuters wished to gain access to the North side, they must board CTA trains at Addison and Wabash.
According to the Sun-Times, fire crews arrived at the 100 block of North State Street. All power to the tracks was immediately shut down.
One CTA official told commuters that the problem was attributed to wiring, while another attributed it to fire at the Lake Street red line stop.
Around 3:40 p.m., the still-and-run box was not pulled and reports say there was no fire.
“It affects my travel plans immensely. It’s (the red line) kind of an artery from campus to camps,” said DePaul student, Arthur Ortiz.
Southbound trains are currently running but all northbound trains delayed.
