While the turn to March certainly means St. Patrick’s Day is upon us, it also means that for DePaul students and faculty, so is spring break.  Whether you’re taking a road trip somewhere or just heading home for a week, music can make the commute a little less lengthy.  From short and sweet songs to tunes that’ll knock out a good chunk of your trip, here are four vastly different songs for your road trip, long flight, or train commute home.

1. “Home” — Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros

Easily the most cliché of the playlist, the 2010 hit love single from the L.A. troupe Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros has been one of the go-to travel songs from the past few years.  While the band has yet to produce a song worthy of the same likes of “Home,” their four albums are decent enough to leave playing throughout your ride home, providing a chill sound for a long ride.

2. “Picture Perfect” — Little Simz

Much different than anything by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Little Simz’s albums would be perfect for a more short and sweet upbeat road trip home.  Released late last year from her album “Stillness in Wonderland,” “Picture Perfect” is a solid summary of her entire album, one filled with soul and psychedelia.  With Little Simz just turning 23-years-old last week, there’s no doubt that she is on her way for an upward trajectory and one of London’s most promising rappers.

3. “Leaving on a Jet Plane” — Peter, Paul and Mary

Obviously chosen for those DePaul students who have to take off from O’Hare or Midway airport to get back home, this song was originally written by John Denver in 1966, the song grew popular after it was recorded by Peter, Paul and Mary. It became their first and last #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. You can also check out Frank Sinatra’s version of this song, and if you’re looking for more airplane theme-songs, Elton John’s “Bennie & The Jets” and The Kinks’ “Gotta Get the First Plane Home” will suffice.

4. “Castle on the Hill” — Ed Sheeran

To celebrate Ed Sheeran’s third studio album that was released this past weekend, it’d be a shame to leave one of his songs off this list.  Arguably the most road trip themed song on the album would be “Castle on the Hill,” one of the lead singles released in early February.
