After a 4-1 week between the men’s and women’s basketball teams, their presence was felt on the weekly awards list announced Monday with a trio of players among the two team honored.

After a strong week of play, senior forward Femi Olujobi, who is in his first season with DePaul, was named to this week’s Big East Honor Roll.

Olujobi had one of his best weeks so far in a Blue Demon uniform after transferring from North Carolina A&T, averaging 19.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per game against Florida A&M and Northwestern.

After DePaul head coach Dave Leitao gave Olujobi his first two starts of the season, Olujobi made the most of the opportunity, shooting over 73 percent (14-19) from the field. Also, he went 1-2 from the three-point range and made 9-11 (.818) free-throw attempts.

“I go out there and contribute wherever I feel I need to contribute to help my team win at the end of the day,” Olujobi said after his team’s win over Florida A&M. “My teammates instill a lot of positivity and belief in me. They know what I’m capable of, so I don’t feel like I need to go out there and prove myself or anything like that. It’s just going out there and doing what I need to do to help my team win.”

In the first game against Florida A&M, Olujobi had 16 points, seven rebounds to go along with an assist and a steal in DePaul’s 65-50 win. Olujobi followed that up on Saturday against rival Northwestern posting season-highs with 22 points and eight rebounds along with two assists and a steal. However, the Blue Demons would end up losing that game to the Wildcats 75-68.

On the season Olujobi is third on the team in scoring per game, 12.3, and is averaging 5.2 rebounds per game as well in 24.9 minutes per game. Olujobi also leads the team in field goal percentage hitting 68.1 percent of his shots for the season. This is also the second straight week with a DePaul player on the honor roll following senior guard Eli Cain’s appearance last week.

Both Olujobi and DePaul will continue their non-conference schedule this week with two more home games against local teams. On Wednesday the Blue Demons host Chicago State and face UIC on Friday night at Wintrust.

On the women’s side, freshman Lexi Held was named Big East Freshman of the Week for the second straight time after she led DePaul to three victories over Temple, Northwestern and Oklahoma. Held scored 33 points in the three games, including 13 against Temple and 17 against Oklahoma, both wins for the Blue Demons.

Joining her on the awards list was senior forward Mart’e Grays, who averaged 17.3 points and six rebounds per game this past week and was subsequently named to the Big East Honor Roll. Grays also set a new career-high with 26 points behind a career-high 12 field goals.

Coming into the game, Grays said she focused on making an impact inside the paint and that’s exactly what she did.

“I knew I had to stay in the paint,” Grays said. “You know I’m trying to get my game going inside the paint so I can be an inside-out player. That’s mainly it. Just focusing and finishing.”

Doug Bruno’s squad has the week off before returning to action Monday against Tennessee State.
