COMMENTARY: A miracle at the Garden won’t save the Dave Leitao regime
Everyone is allowed to believe in miracles; it’s what makes sports so magical. That’s why the month of March is so special in college basketball, because every team has a chance to go on a magical run to close their season – even the bottom feeders.
Just a couple of weeks ago, America celebrated the 40-year anniversary of the “Miracle on Ice,” where the United States hockey team defeated the Soviet Union in the semifinals of the 1980 Olympics. If that was possible, then anything is possible in sports – including the 15-16 DePaul Blue Demons winning the Big East Tournament.
But just because something is possible doesn’t mean it’s worth holding out hope that it will happen. In fact, DePaul, who finished in last place in the Big East with a 3-15 record, goes into the Big East Tournament with the lowest odds to advance to each respective round, with only a 0.4 percent to win the whole tournament.
The Blue Demons will play Xavier in the first round at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday, with the winner taking on No. 2 seed Villanova the following day. Let’s be real: DePaul is not winning the Big East Tournament, and they will probably lose in the first round against Xavier.
In head coach Dave Leitao’s first four years, the Blue Demons have not won a game in the Big East Tournament and have lost all four games by a combined 39 points. Since Leitao was hired in 2015, DePaul is 19-78 in Big East games, with four straight last place finishes.
This year was supposed to be different. With the influx of talent and depth, the potential was there for DePaul to escape the cellar of the conference and emerge as an NCAA Tournament team. And after the 12-1 start during the non-conference portion of the Blue Demons’ schedule, that assumption became even more valid.
But DePaul and Leitao choked in the Big East. The high expectations placed on them entering conference play were too much for them to handle. The Blue Demons finished with a 3-15 record, including an eight-game losing streak from January to February.
“We just played better people,” a source close to the team said. “We played against better programs. We played against programs who take winning more seriously. That’s what’s going to happen when you play teams who care about winning, who don’t want to lose.”
Leitao’s five years at DePaul has been an utter disaster from the on-court production and the program’s behavior off the court. Last week, junior guard Devin Gage became the 12th player to transfer during the Leitao era. Gage was the last remaining player from the class of 2016 still on the roster. Seton Hall, Marquette and Butler, however, all have at least one player from that class who are leading them to the NCAA Tournament this season: Myles Powell, Markus Howard and Kamar Baldwin, respectively. All three of those players were most recently named to the All-Big East first team. DePaul, of course, had nobody on the first team, but junior forward Paul Reed was picked for the second team.
Anyone who has watched Reed this season knows he has the potential to be on that first team, but his coach has ruined his overall potential. That in itself is embarrassing for the program that had so much promise before Christmas.
Those first two years of the Leitao experiment might as well have not happened. Leitao went 18-45 overall and did not land one single four-star recruit in that span, and every player who has come through the program since then has left.
“Leitao’s relationship with his players is kind of hard to explain,” a source close to the team said. “He is different. He goes about things differently.”
The relationship that a coach has with his players is vital to a team’s success, and Leitao has proven that he doesn’t build positive bonds with a lot of his players. Even junior forward Paul Reed and freshman Markese Jacobs have voiced their displeasure with Leitao on Twitter earlier this season. And who can blame them?
A source confirmed to The DePaulia that Gage got angry at the coaches after a 79-67 loss to St. John’s and confronted them in the locker room after the game. They also said that the coaching staff made certain promises about how minutes would be split during the season, and failed to fulfil those promises when the season began in November.
The way that Leitao has handled this season, and frankly the last five years, is shameful for a Big East school. In the team’s last game against Providence, the Blue Demons lost 93-55 at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center on Saturday – the worst loss during Leitao’s tenure. Only a spineless athletic director like Jean Lenti Ponsetto would hire her friend over qualified candidates like Bobby Hurley and Bryce Drew.
Prior to coming to DePaul, Leitao was an assistant coach at Tulsa where he was making a low six-figure salary. And Lenti Ponsetto deemed this man as the right coach to bring DePaul basketball back to its former glory days. And then paid him more than $1 million per year.
Like always, though, she was wrong. Both Lenti Ponsetto and Leitao have helped ruin DePaul basketball — both institutional embarrassments. And both of them should be shown the door when this season painfully ends against Xavier on Wednesday.
A source told The DePaulia that the culture around the men’s team felt “isolating” due to a culture in which they say coaches are unwilling to address the concerns from players about behavior they felt was inconsistent with team values.
This is the type of culture that Leitao has built during his five years with the program, and it goes beyond the awful performances on the court. Leitao also helped get DePaul get in trouble with the NCAA for recruiting violations, and the NCAA suspended Leitao for the first three games of the 2019-2020 season and put the Blue Demons on probation for three seasons. Everything Leitao has touched has turned into dust. He’s by far the most incompetent coach and leader in the Big East.
DePaul will lose to Xavier on Wednesday because the players aren’t being put in the right positions to win on a consistent basis. The Blue Demons pulled off a miraculous 69-68 win over Marquette on March 3, but they followed that up with a 38-point drubbing to the hands of Providence. Both games DePaul played without Reed, who is dealing with a hip pointer injury.
If Lenti Ponsetto had any clue how to run a college program, she would have told Leitao to forget about coaching the Big East Tournament. Instead, the Massachusetts native will be allowed to stand on the sidelines in New York and embarrass the program for one final time. When the season comes to an end at Madison Square Garden, Leitao should announce he won’t be returning next season.
He at least owes that much to the fans who have had to watch his pathetic brand of basketball for five years.

When Ponsetto rehired Leitao she answered the criticism by saying something like ‘I guess my continuing as AD is tied to his success’. A 5 year record of 64-98 is not success in anybody’s book. Pointing to his last 2 years of 5 hundred result for extension justification is pretty weak. Were the Bears a success this year at 8-8? If you can’t create a program that has at least as much success as Creighton, located in that basketball hotbed, Omaha Nebraska, you need to be shown the door. The Ponsetto regime is the 21st century version of the Meyer family regime. It took DePaul too long to remove the Meyer family and it looks like history is repeating itself with Ponsetto.

I just read that Dave Leitao was given a contract extension. Incredible. Well, let me just say that all of us DePaul fans are idiots. I mean, who hangs around for decades watching a bunch of first class losers? Thats absolutely what DePaul is, First Class Losers. So enjoy demons fans, choke on last place for the next 50 years.

Dr. E has had time to examine the university and athletics and now must act as a university president and clean house. Fire JLP. The new AD should hire a new MBB Coach! No more excuses (the arena, $, lack of city HS/AAU connections, NCAA investigations, the Wintrust scandal, etc). The WBB program recruits well (without scandal) and wins NCAA Tournament games! Do the right thing and fire JLP and DL!

Weighing in on @john Murphy’s post. John, you mentioned a few things that I’m weighing in on.
DePaul basketball under Ponsetto and all of her coaching selections, is a septic tank that has been nothing but disappointment and negativity for the better part of 2 decades. Its flippant to call for patience at this point as we are in a surreal place where Ponsetto has somehow lasted 15 years longer than she had any right to last in this post. No disrespect to your post, but I think you are probably sensing the level of pent up frustration across the fan base and the time must be now that the President acts and finally throws the coach and AD out.
You mentioned that “A good recruiting class is on its way”. – As far as any media sources go, that is not true. If you have additional information, please share it. DePaul has 1 player committed for 2020, Kobe Elvis. He may be a talent however it is hard to know given no star ranking. If you’re talking about the 2021 class I would contain any enthusiasm until we get closer to that season. We also had Tyger Campbell and Terrance Shannon sign in recent seasons and they de-committed which is very common in recent years.
You mentioned that “We will bring back our entire squad minus Paul Reed”. You may be right about Reed. We will also lose Devin Gage (transfer) and Coleman-Lands was a senior this past season.
Regarding us being on the verge of competitiveness in the Big East, how on earth can anybody believe that? Sure, those players listed are graduating, but they will be replaced with another army of talented players, like the big east always attracts. Time only stands still for DePaul, but those other squads have lined up their next classes and will come with new firepower.
Lastly you ask “Who is out there to come in and do better”. Unfortunately, this question is easy to answer because 4 last places in a row after a preceding decade and a half of disastrous decline reveals that just about anybody can do better. Of course, in order to truly answer that question, DePaul would have to conduct a well conceived replacement plan. We’ve long felt that the Chicago public league ought to be a source of consistent signings yet that has not happened. Perhaps looking for a replacement at the coaching level that has credibility there. We could look to alumni that has NBA pedigree and coaching experience like Tyrone Corbin or Rod Strickland. Beyond that the options are plenty. I like a guy like Chris Beard for what he has done at Texas Tech. There are many coaches out there that embody the type of leader we’re in need of. As a member of the Big East and a school located in Chicago, we need to go big. Hard to know who we can possibly get until we begin a search in earnest.
Alot of frustration in the DePaul fan base. There is no hope of success with Ponsetto and Leitao at the helm.

Once again De Paul remains the laughingstock of college basketball. Will it ever end?
John murphy • Mar 13, 2020 at 6:49 pm
A lot of negativity here, but the team beat at least ( what would have been) 5 tournament teams and knocked Xavier out of ( what would have been) contention. Surely an NIT bid was coming their way. DL took an unrecruited player from Florida and he morphed into a first round pick. He got a player to transfer from Kansas and be the best point guard in the Big East (yes, better than Zegarowski or McClung). Sure, the team wasn’t good from behind the stripe but they had many high points. A good recruiting class is on its way. Why blow it up? Who is out there to come in and do better? We are on the verge of being really competitive in the toughest conference in America. Oh, and goodbye, Powell, Howard, Marshall, Bey, Baldwin, Jones, etc. Wenwill bring back our entire squad minus Paul Reed, as he will be a first round draft pick.

Right now the men’s basketball program is not the flagship sports program for DePaul, the women’s program is.

THANK YOU!! Thank you for speaking the truth about this coach, this AD and this program!! ALL of them are a complete dumpster fire and have been for quite some time….yet ALL of DePaul never, ever has looked in the mirror to face what damage they have caused…..and it is time they did. This whole program needs to be cleaned out and it will never happen unless we continue to put pressure on them….and this article did just that. So THANK YOU!!!
I graduated from DePaul and it makes me sick to my stomach to see how this once proud program is COMPLETE AND UTTER GARBAGE….and NOBODY at this University seems to care. President Esteban….DO YOUR JOB and clean house!!!
Again THANK YOU for writing this article, it was very well done and very much needed!!!!

DePaul basketball is such a joke that the Chicago sports media doesn’t even cover them anymore! Sun-Times/Tribune/News sports coverage all should be crushing this program. In any other proud sports city in America the media would run a guy like Leitao out of town. Lawrence is the only one in this city trying to make something happen. Thank you.

Depaul is not a Big East team. Let’s face it because Depaul is a mid major program and has nothing to do with coaching. Depaul has done nothing since the 80’s and when DL took us to the tournament. That was when we were in a difference conference. Players always get upset when they don’t get playing time but trust most are not Big East players.
Paul is done and thinks he’s a first rounder not. Not a leader as he is apart but f the reason for the collapse. ThE stronger players were eating him for lunch in the BE. He is not really injured but he has checked out. You may see him play over seas. Devon can’t lead a team at the BE level like many others who have left the program. You need men not boys.

Love this article, and perfect heading into the Big East Tournament!
Someone said it above, but in baseball, three strikes and you’re out. DePaul mens basketball program is “the” program for the university…their flagship program. Her first hire was Wainwright, and even when she kept saying “DePaul needs Jerry”, which she said to me on a phone call, she was a failure, and started this downward spiral. Next, we had MONTHS to hire a coach after Jerry, announced we would pay top dollar, and we got Oliver “I don’t win tournament games” Purnell. Yes he turned around programs, but he was also 60 when we hired him. And it’s not like he was a hall of fame coach. Clemson was about to can him, and we got him, and paid him premium. And then we hired a search firm, have Ustian from the board to “run” this search, and after paying a firm, and having board members run this, the best we can do is Leitao?!?! Someone needs to see thru all this and see that she has no clue what she is doing when it comes to mens basketball.
Jeannie also mentions that “DePaul does things the right way”, and we would never walk that fine line. But the FBI mentions two coaches that is now employed by DePaul, and Leitao was suspended for the first three games. They have cheated, and still can’t win. I’m sorry, but don’t start preaching when there is proof what you preach is totally wrong!
Lastly, whatever happened to Eugene? Our AD loved talking up her brother, loved to mention he was one of the best…which was true. However he announces his retirement, nothing ever said by his own sister and boss, and all his assistants are fired. But after he retires, he then becomes a coach elsewhere? Lots of rumors about how Eugene ran this program, and that Jeannie was fully aware of it…yet nothing is ever done.
Time to fire both of them, but it start up top. She shouldn’t get the right to “retire”, rather she should be shown the door!

Can anyone tell me if JLP and DLs contracts are up at the end of the school year? Until those two are gone DePaul men’s basketball will continue to suffer. It’s a shame and an embarrassment of what DePaul basketball has become over the past 20 years.
Barry Schneider • Mar 10, 2020 at 8:31 am
Great article, Chicago and DePaul deserve better!
Imagine Marquette or Butler just losing for 3-4 years, heads would be rolling. Our AD should be held accountable.!
Martina L. • Mar 9, 2020 at 9:06 pm
The only positive outcome from this disastrous season has been discovering how talented Lawrence is as a writer and observer of the program.
Dr. Esteban sadly has no business being a college president and is a particularly ineffective leader. So don’t expect him to make any hard or strategic decisions regarding the basketball program.
LTD • Mar 9, 2020 at 3:18 pm
Nice Article Depaulia! Finally someone with the guts to call it like it is.
It’s almost miraculous how we have managed to be this terrible for this long.
I guess that is what happens when you pay for a National Search Firm to re-hire an Assistant Coach at Tulsa and who was likely never going to be a Head Coach again.
Victor • Mar 9, 2020 at 3:00 pm
Spot on article! Jlp needs to resign to allow another to steer this program in the right direction. I’m sure she means well and tried but she’s in over her head. Dr. Esteban, are you listening??!!
Ian • Mar 9, 2020 at 12:32 pm
What a painfully bad season of false hope. The disappointment is only compounded by the stunted development of our future core in Weems and Jacobs, and perhaps most sadly, the guy with the highest ceiling, Reed. I’m a DePaul fan, so I won’t pretend expectations were high, but we were absolutely talented enough to compete in the wide-open Big East this year. Such a colossal failure can only by blamed on the coaching. These couple good years of recruiting will be short-lived as kids see 4-star recruits underperform and achieve absolutely nothing at DePaul. God bless Charlie Moore.
ChangeAtDPU • Mar 9, 2020 at 10:41 am
“Only a spineless athletic director like Jean Lenti Ponsetto would hire her friend over qualified candidates like Bobby Hurley and Bryce Drew.”
Absolutely nailed it with this quote, Lawrence.
It’s time for President Esteban and the DePaul Board of Trustees to do the right thing and fire Jean Lenti Ponsetto. Strike 3 with coaches and you’re out, JLP. How can one possibly argue that this woman is capable of hiring a FOURTH head coach? Our flagship program hasn’t made the NCAA Tournament in 16 years. It’s absolute insanity that this woman is never held accountable. That’s WITHOUT even getting into her shady dealings with Wintrust, our ongoing NCAA violations, her brother’s sudden “retirement” and subsequent re-appearance a year later at Auburn, etc. When is enough enough? When is the JLP drama simply not worth it?
No wonder there’s such a revenue short fall. Students don’t want to attend and alums don’t want to donate money to a institution that is complacent on being a perennial loser.
Cold Brew • Mar 9, 2020 at 10:17 am
Great article but those calling for Leitao to resign or hoping he will are so beyond delusional. No agent will allow this nor will the coaches association. He will need to be fired and giving his papers and any buyout language he has in his contract. It just will not be allowed. Even if his contract is up there will be language in there for a financial kicker to take place if it is not renewed. The school has to make the move.
NicholasT • Mar 9, 2020 at 7:42 am
If Dave and Jean care about DePaul University then they both must resign. It is long overdue. If they choose not to do so, then the president of the university must finally act. It must happen now.
Jesse • Mar 9, 2020 at 12:06 am
Why is JLP never held accountable for ruining the flagship program? Our mens program has never been worthy to compete this conference .
Dear Lawrence..... • Mar 8, 2020 at 10:57 pm
…that was perfectly said. Hopefully he walks away and JLP gets fired. The players, students, alumni, and the city of Chicago deserve better. The Big East too.
