Musicians tend to have their own sound, which may have taken years to fully develop. There are times when they go beyond what they typically do and they step outside of their comfort zone. Sometimes they venture from their typical flow into a more commercialized, pop-centric style. Other times, they get into the grittier and more personal subject material. In this list, these artists ventured away from their typical sound.

“Big Energy” by Latto

The pop-inspired song branches out from Latto’s typical hard-hitting rap songs. The Atlanta-based rapper struck gold a couple of years with her hit, “B*tch From Da Souf” and its subsequent remix with Saweetie and Trina.

“Just A Dream” by Nelly

Nelly rose to popularity in the early 2000s with hits like, “Hot in Herre” and “Air Force Ones.” During the early part of his career, he had that Southern-style rap with great rhymes. In 2010, he had a resurgence of his career with a country-pop single called “Just A Dream.” After that, he began experimenting with the sound and he eventually collaborated with Florida Georgia Line a couple of times.

“Have Mercy” by Chloe Bailey

Part of the sister duo Chloe x Halle, Chloe branches out on her own while Halle is filming for “The Little Mermaid.” This upbeat song features a completely different sound from Chloe as it isn’t the typical R&B sound of Chloe x Halle.

“Sorry Mama” by Machine Gun Kelly

The song features Phem, an indie music artist and it’s a dark and somber song, detailing the messed up things that they’re not the proudest of. “Sorry Mama” can be seen as part of the rapper’s transition from rap to punk rock. MGK trades in his rapid-fire rap lyrics for slowed-down existential themes.

“Praying” by Kesha

Otherwise known as Ke$ha, the ballad was a strict change from her previous partying hits. “Praying” was released in 2017 and came out three years after initially filing a lawsuit against Dr. Luke. She alleged that she was verbally, physically, emotionally, and sexually abused by the producer. The song can easily be seen as her testament to her legal battle against her label and Dr. Luke.

“Daddy Lessons” by Beyoncé

The song has a country vibe as there’s a strong presence of the acoustic guitar. Beyoncé is known for her sultry R&B, sometimes hip-hop-inspired, music and “Daddy Lessons” gives totally different energy. The singer has been in the music industry for over two decades, so her style has changed over time, and this is one example of that.
