Shooting near Lincoln Park Zoo shakes up community

The area around the Lincoln Park Zoo is referred to by most as one of the safest and most family friendly attractions in the city. However, as of Sunday morning, that area can now be considered a crime scene.

According to Chicago Police Officer, Laura Kubiak, early Saturday morning at around 4 a.m., hours before neighbors flocked to the nearby Green City Market, police responded to a possible gang-related attack at 2430 N. Cannon Drive, just north of the zoo by Lincoln Park’s North Pond.

A group of people were gathered in the area when two dark vehicles approached and one veered off the road striking a 27-year-old man and then turned around to strike a 21-year-old woman. As the vehicles drove away, a passenger from one opened fire from inside, shooting a second man, 26, in the chest/groin area.

The woman and the 26-year-old man were taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center and 27-year-old man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital said Kubiak. No arrests had been made and the attack was still under investigation as of Sunday afternoon.

Though the shooting did take place near the Lincoln Park Zoo, it is still considered “a safe place” by Zoo officials.
