Graduate forward Meg Newman received the Big East’s Sportsmanship Award on Thursday. She is the eighth Blue Demon who has gotten this award and the first since the 2019-20 season.
Sportsmanship Award winners are strong contributors to their respective teams on and off the court. Major awards like this were selected by a vote of the league’s head coaches, who were not permitted to vote for their own players.
Newman has shown exceptional leadership in her two seasons at DePaul, frequently cheering on her fellow teammates in their on- and off-court endeavours. Alongside her teammates, Newman has served the greater Chicago community by assembling blankets for Marillac St. Vincent Family Services, taking part in community cleanup initiatives in partnership with Molson Coors and their “Cheers to Our Neighborhood” program and leading a youth clinic with Girls in the Game.
Newman received a political science degree in June and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in legal studies and international law.
She will be playing in the last Big East tournament of her career on March 6 at 12:30 p.m. CST in Uncasville, Connecticut against Providence.
