Quad painted with anti-Mexican slur, student arrested

In an incident ringing similar to that of April’s “chalkening,” students found paintings on the Quad reading “Trump 2016” and “F— Mexico” early Tuesday morning. The incident has sparked further outcry about racism and free speech on campus.

According to a statement, the university was alerted to the markings created in a paint-like substance after College Republicans reported it to Public Safety not long after midnight Tuesday morning, and the university filed a criminal damage to property report.

Around 2 p.m. Tuesday, Public Safety apprehended a 22-year-old student, and turned them over to Chicago police who charged them with criminal damage to property. They were released on bond.

“The markings in the Quad last night run contrary to the type of environment we foster at DePaul,” DePaul President Rev. Dennis Holtschneider, C.M., said in a statement. “Destruction of property and profanity are never acceptable ways to voice opinions. This slur against Mexicans goes against everything DePaul stands for. We will work to identify the individual, file charges with the police and bring the university’s disciplinary process to bear. If anyone has knowledge of this matter, I ask them to come forward.”

Chalkings last month – which included support for conservative candidates and phrases such as “Build a Wall” – generated similar controversy on campus. The university removed the chalk under its policy which prohibits political messages on campus.

While College Republicans took responsibility for that incident and defended their actions as free speech, the group’s president, Nicole Been, said the group was out for pizza last night while this incident occurred and returned to find the paintings. A university spokeswoman said that the College Republicans reported the incident to Public Safety, which is how the university first learned about it.

“I can 100 percent confirm it was not us,” Been said.

This comes hours before Milo Yiannopoulos, a conservative journalist and speaker marked by controversy, is scheduled to make an appearance on campus at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Some students have called for the university to ban Yiannopoulos, while others have planned a counter event in the quad later this evening.

On Twitter, Yiannopoulos suggested that the quad paintings were “another progressive hoax.”

The responsibility for a vibrant intellectual debate rests with everyone,” Holtschneider said in a statement. “I encourage the campus community to raise your voices in support of our friends and colleagues of Mexican descent.”

OK. Using the “F word” is a violation of University “Chalking Policy”, which states “messages may not contain profanity or may not abuse, assail, intimidate, demean, victimize, or have the effect of creating a hostile environment for any person or group of people based on any of the protected characteristics in the University’s Anti-Discriminatory Harassment Policy.”

Profanity is a No No. OK. But that makes me wonder – How are the phrases “Make DePaul great again,” “Blue Lives Matter” and “Trump Train 2016” in violation of the above policy? Or perhaps an even better question would be: What would NOT be in violation of the above policy? Let me guess, things like “Brown People are Terrific!” or “We are Pro-Marginalized People – We Love Em” or “Go Marginalized People. We’ve Got Your Back”. OMG. This is way beyond the Twilight Zone and the Outer Limits, we are now officially in the Ludicrous Zone.

But how is “F word Mexico” Racist? Do we know with absolute certainty that the person who chalked that meant “the Mexican People” or the “Mexican Race”? What if the “chalker” was expressing their disgust with the Mexican Government (they do have one? Right?) or the Mexican Drug Cartels or even heaven forbid (Trigger Warning!!!!) the Illegal Aliens! Now I’ve done it! Excuse me, I meant to use the politically correct terms: the “Brown People” or the “Brown Race” or the “Under-served People” or the “Undocumented Immigrants” (is that the current PC term, or maybe it is the “New Americans”?) You people are insane. And when I say “you people” I mean anyone who was outraged by the Chalkening (is that meant to invoke the title of that Horror Movie, in which the little girl says “They’re back”?) or supported the physical assaults by the Black Lives Matter Thugs at the Yiannopoulos’ event. BTW and FTR: “You people” includes all the lunatics of any and all race, colors, creeds, country of origin, nationality, sex, sexuality, gender identification, “privileged” or under-privileged classes, disabled or abled, and any and all other categories that you can devise to separate human beings into warring factions. Thank you for your support.

The charge is criminal damage to property of less than $300. You can use the pull-down menu at the CPD site to search by charge, or you can search by name. If you search by name, only one item comes up:

“Around 4 p.m. Tuesday, the university said Public Safety had identified
the student responsible for the markings. The student admitted guilt, a
complaint was signed and they were taken into custody by the Chicago

Since it was never made public who the student was, I’m putting it at 99% chance of hoax.

The current version of the article (above) gives his name, as do Chicago PD records.

The real question is what his political leanings might be. I’d bet on SJW, but don’t know for a fact. (In that case, it wouldn’t be a hoax so much as a false-flag operation — that is, SJW puts up some graffiti and hopes the “other side” gets the blame.)

Does anyone know anything about this guy?

Total hoax, but instructive. President Holtschneider thinks the phrase “F— Mexico” is a slur against Mexicans (even though no slur was used, and the profanity was directed at a country). So applying Holtscheider’s logic, when the Left says “f— America”, or it burns an American flag, that is a slur against all Americans and the full weight and force of the University’s disciplinary process should be brought to bear.

    • H

      haaaaaaaaaaMay 27, 2016 at 2:20 pm

Not a hoax. Also, your argument is a pedantic one at best. “F— Mexico” is obviously meant as an indictment against its people, not an abstract landmass.

        AntnysMay 27, 2016 at 8:44 pm

The College Republicans say Peter Myers (DePaul grad student) isn’t in any way affiliated with their org. His interests on, which include poverty & inequality, deindustrialization and social sciences, make him sound rather inclined to SJW activism. Furthermore, Myers’ Winnetka home address (from the public arrest record that you posted) screams limosine liberal Bernieac; for not only is Winnetka one of the wealthiest towns in the US, but 3/4 of the population are registered Democrats (according to Now I could be wrong — you didn’t want me to be pedantic, so I’m inferring away — but given all of the above, plus zero mention of any hate-based motivation in the news, I’m sticking with LEFTIST HOAX until I read a headline that says otherwise.

      • F

        Feisty HayseedMay 29, 2016 at 10:02 pm

No. If the “chalker” intended an indictment against its people, the “chalker” would have wrote “F word Mexicans” (it’s only two more letters). Although your use of the term “pendantic” does show that you may be accidentally learning something (not an actual education, of course, but something). Carry On!
