DePaul men’s basketball picked up an unexpected transfer on Monday when it was reported that freshman point guard Austin Grandstaff would make the move to DePaul.
Grandstaff has had an inconsistent route to DePaul. He originally signed with Ohio State as a freshman in 2015-16 and played ten games for the Buckeyes, averaging 4.4 points a game. After ten games, however, he announced his transfer to Oklahoma. He left the Sooners in May, however, and committed to DePaul.
He is a 6’4″ point guard that was rated by Scout as the 15th best point guard in the nation, and 60th best overall player in the nation. He was a four-star recruit coming out of high school and adds to DePaul’s heavy roster of guards. This news puts DePaul one player over the 13-player scholarship limit for 2016-17, which means either some player will leave or that a player will be re-classified as a walk-on. This could be done with Billy Garrett Jr., since his father is an assistant coach on the team.
