Fresh into a new quarter, the DePaul women’s basketball team looks to keep things smooth in the Big East as they host Seton Hall at McGrath-Phillips Arena at 7 p.m. tonight. They return from a two-game road trip that saw them improve to 3-0 in conference play after wins over Providence and Creighton. 

The Blue Demons earned the no. 15 spot in the latest rendition of the Associated Press poll, their highest mark of the season. Their DePaulBall attack is working wonders, as they are fifth in the nation in assists per game, second in scoring offense, second in 3-pointers made per game, and fourth in assist-turnover ratio. This is all while forcing 23.8 turnovers a game. 

These stats are just a reflection of the style and skill portrayed on the court by players like seniors Chante Stonewall and Kelly Campbell, who are steering the ship. Great help comes from breakout performers Sonya Morris and Lexi Held, both current sophomores. Junior Dee Bekelja and transfer Deja Church have both started games and added needed scoring and defense. 

Now, the preseason Big East favorites are looking to get out to a quick 4-0 start against Seton Hall. The Pirates are coming into the game at 10-5 and 3-1 in the Big East. Desiree Elmore pours in 14.9 points per game to lead the Pirates on their recent 5-1 streak. 

Seton Hall is another team floating around at 3-1. DePaul is still the only undefeated team in conference play, but Seton Hall, Creighton and St. John’s are right there behind them. In order to keep ahead, it will just be about getting one win at a time.

As DePaul has the most prolific offense in the conference, Seton Hall averages the third-most points per contest at 71.3 as well as holding teams to just 60.3 points per game. Any team going against the Blue Demons is going to be clashing two styles against each other. Not many teams play as DePaul does, but Big East foes have been around long enough to know what they’re in for. 

Seton Hall’s opponents are shooting just 30 percent from deep. They also tend to split the rebounding battle, where they come down with just two more boards per game compared to their opponents. 

Look for how Sonya Morris bounces back offensively tonight. The sophomore shot just 1-for-12 from the floor in the win against Creighton. Morris is the second-leading scorer on DePaul and a player with her abilities tends to not string together games like that. Like any player on this team, Morris can make an impact in other places on the floor when shots aren’t falling.

DePaul’s crash with Creighton will be broadcasted on the Big East Digital Network at 7 p.m. DePaul will then turn its attention to St. John’s for an FS1 clash at McGrath-Phillips Arena for a Sunday noon tip-off.
