After running 13.1 miles in the Life Time Chicago Half-Marathon on Sept. 28, Chief Copy Editor and Newsletter Editor Amber Corkey recounts the songs that kept them putting one foot in front of the other.
Five months ago, a friend asked me, “Do you want to run the half-marathon with me in September?” Hell no, Lora! I do not! But it gnawed at me for the rest of the day. I remembered my runs in middle school, my long distance biking stint during high school. So I laced up my high school gym shoes and ran a mile. It was terrible — but I was hooked.
With some fresh New Balance sneakers, a reflective running vest, and plenty of orange blossom Honey Stinger energy chews, I lined up in Corral J at 6:30 a.m. in the historic Jackson Park. And though I ran (and walked) 2:52:56 with no music, here’s what kept me running for 150 miles of training for a 13.1 mile race.
