Crystal Castles feeds the fire at the Riviera

In a flurry of chaotic lights and screaming vocals, Alice Glass and Ethan Kath, known together as the electro-duo Crystal Castles performed songs from their self-titled album to a sold out crowd March 12 at the Riviera Theater. Notoriously riotous front-woman Alice took the stage with a broken leg, delivering a turbulent show nonetheless. The injury kept her from her normal crowd-surfing, security cursing routine, and she instead opted for planting herself in the center of the stage for most of the show, swaying into the front row throughout the entire performance.

Tall LED lights provided a background of blinding flashes, showcasing the silhouettes of the two performers churning out their endlessly popular electronic beats supplemented with Alice’s melodic shrieks and Ethan’s occasional vocal input.

A high point in the evening came with the explosive energy of the song “Doe Deer,” with purple lights flashing into the audience and Alice thrashing around the stage. The crowd went crazy, as is always the way with Crystal Castles’ shows and their dedicated following.

After almost two hours of sweaty audience flailing and all-encompassing beats, the two retracted backstage, only to burst back out for the encore, which found Alice laying on the right side of the stage, rolling and gyrating with the music, making the audience scream even louder than they had been for the entirety of the show.

At the end of it all, the lipstick-smeared, sweat-drenched Alice snatched up her crutch and hoisted herself back onto her feet, she and Ethan departing the stage with exultant waves back at the audience.

Never disappointing, Crystal Castles further solidified their place in the hearts of Chicago fans with another exceptional performance.
