Weekend round up: November 8-10

As DePaulians, we go to class every day in one of the biggest cities in the entire country. By the time our freshman year’s winter quarter rolls around, the magic of Chicago has been lost on most of us. Skyscrapers and art museums are just a part of campus, nothing to marvel at.

In fact, city living makes a lot of us cynical, especially after spending 20 minutes searching for parking spots or being jammed on a redline train during rush hour. We often can forget that Chicago hasn’t always been the city we now know and love. Luckily, if you’re interested in learning how our city’s made its mark on the global map, there’s a ton of events around town this weekend that will please any history buff.

The Field Museum is opening their vaults for their new Wonder’s of the 1893 World’s Fair exhibit. The exhibit showcases many artifacts from the fair, which is often cited as the event that put Chicago on the world’s map. The Ferris wheel and juicy fruit gum were just two of the latest inventions and innovations introduced at the fair.

Even the Field Museum itself was built as part of the fair. Many of the pieces on exhibit have never been scene in public before, so make sure to check out the exhibit while it’s here. General admission for The Field Museum is $12 with a student ID.

If you’re more interested in the history of the Chicago music scene, The Chicago History museum will be hosting one of the Second Saturdays event, and this month’s theme is Chicago’s musical past. Join musician and educator, Lenny Marsh, to explore Chicago’s musical past with interactive activities. The cost is free with museum admission, but a DePaul student perk is that we all have membership to the Chicago History Museum.

For those of you who are already Chicago history experts, consider visiting the Chicago Public Library’s B.Y.O.F. Found Footage Film Festival at the Bezazian library this Saturday at 2 p.m. Grab your old Super 8 reels from the attic or thrift store find, and screen it at the library. General audience material is accepted, and you can drop off your footage early to reserve your spot. It’s a great way to share your own Chicago history.
