Weekend round-up: Oct. 3-6

This weekend marks the first one of October, which means it’s finally time to enjoy to spookiest part of the year. Chicago’s a city full of haunted history and it goes all out with events the entire month, so make sure to kick it off right. It doesn’t matter if you’re a scaredy-cat or a ghost hunter – there’s something to do for everyone this weekend.

The Logan Theater in Logan Square is starting off their Horror Movie Madness this Thursday night with a showing of the much beloved Halloween classic, “Hocus Pocus.” For anyone who didn’t watch the Disney Channel as a child, “Hocus Pocus” is the story of a trio of 300-year-old witches in Salem who are brought back to life in Salem, Massachusetts and one teenage boy, his crush, his little sister and a talking cat have to put an end to their terror before they capture all the children in the town. The only chance to experience the film on the Big Screen is Thursday, but the theater will be playing other scary movie classics like “Poltergeist” and “Candyman” this weekend too.

If you’re over 21-years-old (sorry, underclassmen), make a visit to the Museum of Contemporary Art for their event “October First Fridays: Magic” for a less spooky Friday night. Starting at 6 p.m. the museum is hosting an evening of movies, music and magic with their walls. Denis Watkins will be performing Harry Houdini’s illusion “Metamorphosis,” and other magicians such as Eugene Burger, David Kovac and Sean Masterson will be performing illusions and tricks all night. Artist and Curator Christ LeMaster will be showing short films about the magic of cinema and 1960s-style pop band Girl Group Chicago will be performing in the evening. There will be food to purchase as well as a cash bar at the event. Advance tickets cost $14 and general admission tickets cost $18 at the door.

However, if you want to spend your weekend screaming at the tops of your lungs and fearing for your life, take a drive out to Joliet and visit Statesville Haunted Prison. The theme of this frightening haunted house is one of rioting prisoners who were too evil to die and are now living in the prison. No matter what you’re afraid of, Statesville has your fear covered. There are clowns on bungee cords, subhuman demons and cannibals with chainsaws – Statesville is not for the faint of heart. So grab a group of friends and try to make it through alive. Tickets cost $30 for the haunted house.
